The school year is ending and Summer is approaching, which means it’s time for road trips! Now that places are opening back up and we can actually explore—as opposed to this same time a year ago—it’s extra important to be sure your vehicle is ready for its first real quest in a while.
It’s always a good idea to take precautions with your car as Summer approaches. Extreme heat can do major damage to integral parts of your car without you even knowing it. If these sensitive elements in your vehicle are not checked regularly, you could end up stranded, or even worse, you could end up needing a new vehicle.
At Mount Airy Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, we are all about hitting the road with safety in mind. We always make sure our vehicles are ready before a long drive, and so should you. Here are four ways to make sure your car remains alive and well during those Summer excursions:
· Even if it’s relatively new, have your battery checked. Heat and vibration can cause your battery to wriggle free from its connections; sitting in the sun all day can evaporate battery fluids, and long Summer trips can cause your battery to corrode and negatively affect the vehicle’s performance. Be sure to scrape away any corrosion, and check that all wire connections are properly made.
· Have your coolant flushed. Your vehicle’s coolant fluid keeps the engine from overheating—something VERY important during the Summer months. After long periods of time, the coolant can become contaminated and less effective. It’s a good idea to have this fluid flushed and replaced with fresh coolant that can keep your car running smoothly.
· Check all other important fluids. Your car runs the best when the oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and brake fluid are all topped off. These are relatively easy to check and should be looked at about once a week. · Get your air conditioning system checked by a certified professional. Driving without air conditioning in the Summer is uncomfortable, especially on those longer trips: it can cause dreariness and fatigue for the driver, putting you and your passengers at risk. Even if you’re A/C seems to be okay, it’s a great idea to have it checked anyway. You never know when it could run out of fluid or break down. And you do not want to be in the middle of a Summer road trip when this happens.
