Trump Tariffs in the News - Buy A Used Car Now

Why Buy a Used Car Now: Understanding the Impact of Proposed Auto Tariffs on Vehicle Prices

In the evolving landscape of the automotive industry, recent policy proposals have the potential to significantly influence both new and used car markets. One such development is President Donald Trump’s announcement of a 25% tariff on imported vehicles and auto parts, set to take effect on April 3, 2025. This policy aims to bolster domestic manufacturing by imposing reciprocal tariffs on foreign goods. However, it also raises questions about the future pricing of vehicles, particularly in the used car market. Source:   CNN, New Your Post

Anticipated Effects on New Car Prices

The implementation of these tariffs is expected to lead to substantial increases in new car prices. Financial experts estimate that the average cost of an imported vehicle could rise by $5,000 to $10,000. This escalation is attributed to the additional costs manufacturers will incur due to the tariffs, which are likely to be passed on to consumers. The impact will be particularly pronounced for models that rely heavily on imported components or are entirely manufactured abroad. Source:   CBS, Reuters, Insider, New York Post

Implications for the Used Car Market

As new car prices climb, consumers may increasingly turn to the used car market as a more affordable alternative. This shift in demand is anticipated to drive up prices in the used car sector. According to industry analysts, used car prices could rise by thousands of dollars as a result of heightened demand. This trend mirrors past market behaviors where constraints in new car supply, such as during the pandemic-related semiconductor shortages, led to significant upticks in used car valuations.  Source:   Investopedia.

Expert Insights on Market Dynamics

Industry experts have weighed in on the potential repercussions of the proposed tariffs:

Mike Jackson, Chairman and CEO of AutoNation, the largest auto retailer in the U.S., has expressed concerns about the inflationary impact of the tariffs. He stated, “Automotive tariffs will make steel tariffs look like a company picnic. This will unleash a real trade war. The numbers are so much bigger. It will raise prices dramatically for consumers in the United States. It will be inflationary.” Source:  Bloomberg, Spokesman Review, The Lewiston Tribune

Peter Welch, President and CEO of the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA), warned of “serious unintended consequences” of tariffs on imported autos and parts. He emphasized that such tariffs would hurt the auto industry, customers, and the economy as a whole, leading to higher prices and fewer choices for consumer.

Cody Lusk, President and CEO of the American International Automobile Dealers Association (AIADA), highlighted concerns over affordability and the broader economic impact on consumers and dealers. He noted that with the average price of a new vehicle now around $50,000, higher costs and rising interest rates are already squeezing consumer budgets.

Patrick Anderson, CEO of Anderson Economic Group, emphasized that “these are cost increases that cannot be hidden from the consumer,” suggesting that substantial portions of the increased costs will be passed along to consumers or lead manufacturers to halt production of certain models. Source:  CBS News,

Potential Impact on Auto Repairs and Maintenance

The tariffs are also expected to affect the cost of auto repairs and maintenance. Since many replacement parts are imported, a 25% tariff could lead to higher prices for components such as brake pads and batteries. Consequently, even consumers who choose to maintain their current vehicles may face increased expenses.

Strategic Considerations for Consumers

Trump Tariffs - Kelly Blue Book

Given the anticipated price increases in both new and used car markets, consumers may need to reassess their purchasing strategies:

  • Timing Purchases: Acquiring a used car before the full effect of the tariffs is realized could result in cost savings. As demand for used vehicles rises, prices are expected to follow suit.
  • Evaluating Financing Options: With potential price hikes, exploring favorable financing options becomes crucial to mitigate the financial impact.
  • Considering Vehicle Maintenance: Investing in comprehensive maintenance plans might be prudent to offset future repair costs, especially if parts prices increase due to tariffs.

Conclusion

The proposed 25% tariffs on imported vehicles and auto parts are poised to reshape the automotive market by increasing prices across both new and used car sectors. Consumers should stay informed about these developments and consider their timing and options carefully when making vehicle-related decisions. Engaging with reputable dealerships and financial advisors can provide valuable guidance during this period of market adjustment. Source:  CBS News, Market Watch, Insider

The Jeep Compass has carved a niche for itself in the crowded compact SUV market, offering a compelling blend of Jeep’s rugged DNA with everyday practicality. It’s a vehicle that can handle the urban jungle just as confidently as it tackles the winding mountain roads of North Carolina. But with several trim levels and updates to consider, how do you choose the right Compass for you? Let’s dive in and explore everything you need to know about this versatile SUV.

What’s New with the Jeep Compass?

Jeep continuously refines its vehicles, and the Compass is no exception. While specific details of the newest model year can vary, recent updates have focused on enhancing technology, improving fuel efficiency, and refining the overall driving experience.  At Mount Airy Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram & Fiat, our 2025 models have already arrived!  Check out our website to see the new features, engine options, and available packages.

Trim Levels: Choosing the Right Compass for Your Needs

The Jeep Compass typically comes in several trim levels, each offering a different combination of features and capabilities. While the exact names and offerings can change from year to year, common trims include the Sport, Latitude, and Limited (and sometimes Trailhawk for off-road enthusiasts). Understanding the differences between these trims is crucial for making an informed decision.

  • Sport: The Sport trim represents the entry point into the Compass lineup. It typically offers a solid foundation of essential features, which include a top of the line infotainment system, comfortable cloth seating, and key safety features. It’s a great option for budget-conscious buyers who appreciate the Jeep brand and want a reliable SUV.
  • Latitude: Stepping up to the Latitude trim adds more comfort and convenience features. You will find upgrades like a larger touchscreen infotainment system, alloy wheels, more premium interior materials, and additional technology options. The Latitude is a popular choice for those seeking a balance of value and features.
  • Limited: As the name suggests, the Limited trim sits at the top of the lineup (excluding specialized trims like the Trailhawk). It boasts premium features such as leather upholstery, advanced safety technologies, a premium sound system, and even more powerful engine options. The Limited caters to buyers who want a more luxurious and feature-rich experience.

What the Experts Say

Reputable automotive publications offer valuable insights into the Jeep Compass. Here’s a glimpse of what some have said (remember to consult recent reviews for the latest model year):

  • Cars.com: The Compass is known for its styling.  It bears a strong resemblance to the larger Grand Cherokee. They also highlight the user-friendly infotainment system and comfortable ride.
  • Road & Track: The Compass’s on-road handling is unique and it offers excellent light off-roading capabilities, especially in the Trailhawk trim.
  • Car and Driver: Car and Driver have several in-depth reviews of the Compass engine performance, fuel economy, and interior design.  They offer fair comparisons to competing vehicles in the SUV market.  It’s worth a Google!

It’s always wise to check these resources for the most recent reviews and comparisons to make sure the Compass aligns with your specific needs.

  • Off-Road Capability (Trailhawk): The Trailhawk trim, with its specialized off-road features, is often lauded for its surprisingly capable performance on trails.

Is the Jeep Compass Right for You?

The Jeep Compass occupies a unique space in the compact SUV segment. It’s not the most fuel-efficient or the most spacious, but it offers a compelling combination of style, versatility, and Jeep’s renowned off-road heritage (especially in the Trailhawk trim). If you’re looking for a vehicle that can handle both daily commutes and weekend adventures, the Compass is definitely worth considering.

Tips for Choosing Your Compass:

  • Define your needs: Consider your driving habits, cargo needs, and budget. This will help you narrow down the trim level and features that are most important to you.

A running camera can deter theft, vandalism, and accidents on the road.

We’ve all seen dash cams in cars before, but what is their purpose? Why would anyone want a recording of their driving? Come to find out, there are multiple purposes for using dash cams, and all of them are important–important enough that every driver today should have one installed. In the modern age of driving, having a recording of your trips (or accidents, speeding tickets, etc.) can be incredibly beneficial. Let’s see why.

Exactly What is a Dash Cam?

A dash cam is a small camera that is mounted to your vehicle’s dashboard, windshield, or rear-view mirror, and its primary function is to record video footage of your trip, as short or as long as it may be, to provide you with a visual record of all the events that took place during the drive. The camera connects to your car’s power supply and it begins recording right at the start of your trip, and it stores the recorded footage on a memory card or some other device that is easily removable. Once your drive and the recording are finished, you can access and review any of the recordings at any time.

One of the many things that’s nice about dash cams is that they all come with a variety of features. GPS tracking, night vision, audio recording–these are only a few of the available functions used to provide you with a more comprehensive look at your travels. Imagine the protection against fraud, the deterrent for reckless driving, and even the capability of making memories this one device can offer.

Now that we know what a dash cam is and what it does, let’s look into why you should own one.

Is It Truly Worth The Purchase?

In short, yes. Absolutely it is. Dash cams are invaluable for drivers. This tool can provide valuable evidence for settling insurance claims and even settling legal disputes in the event of a car accident. Moreover, a dash cam can protect you from fraud by recording particular incidents that happen on the road, like staged/phony accidents and false insurance claims. Think of how nice it would be for parents of teen drivers to have a dash cam recording that allows you to monitor their driving behaviors. Your teen might be more apt to follow the rules of the road a bit more conscientiously if they know mom and dad are watching!

Another great reason to install a dash cam is to capture those beautiful drives through scenic mountains, forests, etc. With your dash cam, you can record it all.

What Are The Different Types of Dash Cams?

There are a lot of dash cams to choose from. Do a quick Amazon search and you will be inundated with cams all offering different features and capabilities. Here are a few of our favorite types of dash cams along with a quick description of what they can do:

  • Single Channel Dash Cams

These are the most basic type to purchase, as they only record footage from the front of the car. Since they have one, primary function these are usually the most affordable option, and they work well for drivers who only need a basic recording of the events that took place in the front of their vehicle. You can purchase a single-channel cam for around $100.

  • Dual Channel Dash Cams

Dual-channel cams offer footage from both the front and the rear of the car, which makes them a great choice for drivers who want a recorded view of their travels. It’s true most of the action takes place up front, but there can be plenty happening behind you as well. Not a bad idea to get the front and rear view. Dual-channel dash cams come at around $200-$300, depending on the brand.

  • 4K Dash Cams

4K dash cams provide drivers with a high-definition video recording. The footage a 4K captures is incredibly clear and detailed without blemish and is a must for anyone who knows they will be coming across a scene they will want to be recorded with wonderful clarity. To nobody’s surprise, this type of dash cam is a bit more expensive, running anywhere from $375 to $500.

  • Rear-View Mirror Cameras

Cameras that mount to your car’s rear-view mirror seamlessly blend into the interior, so passengers might not even notice it if you don’t share that you have one. These types of cameras are made to discreetly provide a recording without interfering with your view of the road, as well as, the car’s natural aesthetic. This mirror cam most often comes with a larger screen that can display a live feed of your surroundings, and you can check your footage as you drive.

*A quick note on lithium-ion and capacity battery-powered dash cams: lithium-ion and supercapacitor are the two most commonly used dash cam battery types. Both have their good and not-so-good aspects, mostly depending on how they are used, but we have found that the supercapacitor is more efficient, as it tends to have a longer running life due to its ability to work under extreme heat and cold weather conditions.

Even More Benefits of Having a Dash Cam

Personal security is one of the best reasons to drive with a dash camera. A running camera can deter theft, vandalism, and accidents on the road. Some even offer a parking feature that allows drivers to monitor the vehicle’s surroundings while the car is parked and left alone. Safety is a reason alone that dash cams are flying off the shelf, especially during the holiday season and times of high travel and therefore high theft.

The ability to have video evidence at the ready is a wonderful way of safekeeping video evidence you have captured of a crime or car accident. This evidence is an incredibly valuable asset to use in any sort of legal proceedings, as it can dispute against fraudulent insurance claims–something we see happening way too often these days.

Businesses have even turned to dash cams as a way of encouraging and monitoring safe driving (think delivery trucks and various taxi services). Could there be a better way to keep drivers aware of their actions and driving behaviors than installing a dash cam? We think not.

You can consider your dash cam as another set of eyes on the road, working in tandem with you to make sure your travels are safe. With this added layer of security, drivers can feel more confident knowing their journey is being recorded and anything captured can be seen and used as needed.

Anyone who travels often or who spends copious amounts of time on the road (for work or pleasure), certainly should have a dash cam. They can be used to capture interesting images, scenic footage, or as mentioned above save you from entering into dangerous situations. Consider purchasing a dash cam today, and start recording your travels, no matter how big or small.

The 2024 Heavy Duty comes mostly unchanged, except for one small feature: the Tailgate Ajar warning light now comes as standard equipment for every Heavy Duty in the lineup.

Three engine options are available with the new Ram Heavy Duty. First, there is a 410-horsepower, 6.4-liter V-8 that makes 429 pound-feet of torque (and is paired with an eight-speed automatic, which is the only transmission offered in the Power Wagon). Also offered is a 6.7-liter Cummins diesel inline-six in either rear- or four-wheel driving availabilities. The Cummins engine outweighs the V-8 by 490 pounds, but it doesn’t handle quite as well on smaller roads and around town, and compared to the V-8, the diesel is not as quick. Where it shines though is in its towing power.

The Ram truck was first introduced in 1981, and it was meant to serve as anything from a comfortable family vehicle to a rugged work truck. As years went on, and with numerous awards won along the way, the Ram evolved to fit the ever-changing needs of the modern driver. Today the Ram has become a staple family/luxury/work vehicle that continues to impress and evolve. With both the Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 truck models growing in popularity, it’s worth taking a closer look into what makes each special.

2025 Ram 1500

Since the 2025 Ram 1500 model is set to receive some major updates, not many changes have been made to the 2024 model. The new 1500 will be offering multiple engine options, such as a 305-horsepower V-6 and a 395-horsepower V-8 that offers 12,750 pounds of towing. And of course, it comes with rear- or four-wheel-drive, and multiple cab options (regular-size, extended, and a large four-door crew) that can reach over six feet.

Mount Airy Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Fiat customers have found that the interior of the Ram 1500 has plenty of cubby storage and room for passengers to stretch and relax. Some of the higher trim levels come with luxurious features such as heated and ventilated seats, a panoramic sunroof, premium leather materials, and real wood accents. With an incredibly spacious crew cab, tons of storage, and a special split-folding tailgate, the 2024 1500 is tough to beat. And, though the Ram does not offer the 1500 as a regular cab any longer, the 1500 Classic will come as an optional regular cab for the purists out there.

The Ram 1500 has always been noted for its superior safety features, and over the years these features have only become more refined. As we become more advanced, so do our vehicles, which means it’s important that the Ram pickup keep up with the times.

2025 RAM 1500 RHO

New RAM RHO - Mount Airy NCBrand New this year, Ram introduced the Ram 1500 RHO: This new model is a high-output version of the Ram 1500, offering a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine with 540 horsepower.

It’s designed to compete with the Ford Raptor and other high-performance off-road trucks and it does not disappoint.

Ram Heavy Duty Truck 2025

2025 Ram 1500 REV

Later in the year Ram expects to release their new electric pickup truck.  Ram 1500 REV: It will have a range of over 500 miles and will be available in both single-cab and crew-cab configurations.

2024 Jeep Wrangler

There have been a few new upgrades made to the 2024 Jeep Wrangler, such as a more modernized look and a mild upgrade to the tech features. There are also 10 new wheel designs to choose from. But, it’s the interior display of the Wrangler where we see most upgrades this year: a 12.3-inch Infotainment display now comes standard. This new display replaces the smaller 5.0- and 7.0-inch screens of the past while also offering Jeep’s latest Infotainment software including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. While navigating the onboard system, drivers can choose from any of the over 2,000 trail maps–and there is the ability to download even more.

We wanted to test the performance of a few of the Wrangler trim levels here at Mount Airy Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Fiat. We started with the base-level Wrangler Sport. This V-6, six-speed manual transmission engine easily went from 0-60 mph in 6.1 seconds. Next, we drove the popular Sahara model with an automatic transmission, and it reached 60 mph in 6.8 seconds (the four-cylinder engine of the Sahara got to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds). Lastly, we drove the heavy-duty Rubicon model. This robust version of the Wrangler comes with all the bells and whistles, and we found it hit 60 mph in only 4.4 seconds!

Other car companies may try, but nothing matches the look and performance of a Jeep Wrangler. To own one is to own an anomaly, something so unique it holds a class of its own. You can even customize your Wrangler to differentiate it from others by adding specialized lights, mirrors, a soft- or hard-top, lifting or lowering…the list of customizations to the Jeep Wrangler is endless.

Chrysler Pacifica in 2024

There are only a few changes made to the Chrysler Pacifica in 2024. The Pacifica Pinnacle comes with a new Sepia interior color option, and Red Hot and Baltic Gray new paint colors have been added to the other Pacifica trim levels.

One thing about the Pacifica we love is its easy cleaning. An optional vacuum cleaner comes built into the new Pacifica, and our technicians at Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Fiat had to test it. Honda has a similar feature in the Odyssey, but it’s placed way in the back and is difficult to access. When accessing the Pacifica’s Stow & Vac system, we noticed it is placed in the second row, which is a smart move since the second row is where most traffic comes and goes, especially on long road trips. The Stow & Vac was able to reach every corner of the Pacifica, and it did a wonderful job picking up dirt and crumbs. We give the Pacifica’s vacuum feature an A+.

Pacifica Vacuum - Mount Airy Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Fiat

As in years past, the 2024 Chrysler Pacifica’s design is expertly laid out for optimum comfort. Its long body takes on a shape like that of a sporty SUV, only the Pacifica sits lower to the ground. This allows for easy access and plenty of room from the front of the cabin back to the trunk. The dual-panel moonroof over the second row, and the fixed-panel moonroof over the third row, provide natural lighting and a better view for the entire family.

2024 Dodge Durango

This year, the Dodge Durango has a few changes made: the Citadel trim level will now offer the Tow N Go package, and an upgraded version of blind spot monitoring has been added throughout the Durango lineup. This new system knows when you are towing so it doesn’t get confused by the presence of your trailer just inches from your rear bumpeGrey vehicle rear view

One area that needs no upgrading is the Durango’s media technology. Currently, the Durango’s Infotainment system that sits right above its dashboard is the best in the market. The base SXT and the mid-level GT Durango models come with an 8.4-inch display, while the Citadel and R/T models come with a 10.1-inch screen (this is also an option for the GT). No matter which size system you get, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard. There’s an option for a rear-seat infotainment system as well, which has dual screens, and it provides HDMI and RCA ports to connect more devices. This is a great feature for long trips with the family; imagine driving down the Blue Ridge Parkway from Mount Airy to Virginia with a Durango full of family, all watching their shows and listening to music–everyone is happy and, best of all, everyone is quiet.

Grey Dodge Durango

When Dodge first came out with the Durango, over 25 years ago, its body-on-frame construction was modeled after the Dakota truck. The Durango was a truck/SUV crossover that won over drivers with its rugged demeanor and semi-sporty shape. Over the years the Durango made slight alterations to design and construction, but it’s never lost its toughness. Today’s model, however, has managed to combine its hardy physique with a touch of something more refined and sophisticated, creating a furrowed luxury difficult to find anywhere else.

2024 Jeep Compass

  • 2024 Jeep Compass Latitude

  • 2024 Jeep Compass Limited
  • 2024 Jeep Compass Trailhawk
  • 2024 Jeep Compass Sport

The all-new 2024 Jeep Compass comes at a low starting price of around $27,000. It also comes with quite a few new features, including the following:

  • Full-Speed Forward-Collision Warning Plus
  • Blind-Spot and Cross-Path Detection
  • Active Lane-Management System
  • ParkSense Front and Rear Park-Assist System
  • Pedestrian and Cyclist Emergency Braking
  • Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go

Most notably new with the Compass in 2024 is an improved engine that offers better fuel economy than it has in the past. This year, every Jeep Compass comes with a 200-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine that also makes 221 pound-feet of torque. All of these elements work together to create 24 mpg in the city; 32 mpg on the highway; and 27 mpg combined. A few of our technicians at Mount Airy Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Fiat decided to test the inline-four turbocharged engine to see if it offers the right amount of power for the Compass’s compact frame. What they found was that the Compass can reach 60 mpg in only 7.5 seconds without shaking or struggling at all. The turbocharged engine pushes the Compass just enough to get it hustling, but never too much so that its frame is compromised.

Technically, the 2024 Jeep Compass is a crossover vehicle, but with its rounded front end and curved lighting units, it looks and feels more like a mini–Grand Cherokee. Regardless of what we call it, the Compass has upped its game this year with some new tech and safety features, as well as a new, powerful engine that offers just the right amount of power to get the Jeep Compass to perform at its best.

Though it may not look like it at first glance, plenty has been done to refresh the Jeep Gladiator. For starters, the 2024 Gladiator gets a bit more curvature around the rear and front and a rounder grille has been added to the face of the truck. Also new this year, there will no longer be a diesel, V-6 option; the new Gladiator will run on a gas 3.6-liter, V-6 engine only. What’s more, Jeep’s Gladiator is one of the only pickup trucks on the market to offer a six-speed manual transmission as an option instead of the standard eight-speed automatic transmission.

One element of the Jeep Gladiator that we, at Mount Airy Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Fiat, find fascinating is the zipperless Sunrider soft-top and lightweight panels to the hard top. both are easier than ever to add and remove—with one hand, even. Now drivers can go from a covered vehicle to a complete convertible within just a few minutes.

What’s not to love about the all-new Gladiator’s long frame that stretches across the road? It sits low, atop four chunky wheels, crouched in position to take off and cut through rugged paths. Its boxy shape reminds us it is still a Wrangler, but the open bed in back changes everything. In full view, the Gladiator shines bright with slight curvature around the bed and front, but all still follow long, hard lines creating the 218-inch frame (the longest Jeep made). It’s truly a marvel to watch this machine take over the road.

The 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee comes largely unchanged this year, except for some new 18-inch polished aluminum wheels for the mid-range Limited trim level. One of the original Jeep designs, the Grand Cherokee is best known for bridging the gap between being an off-road icon and an open-road cruiser, and this duality has helped the Cherokee appeal to a broad audience.

The new Grand Cherokee is a roomy mid-size SUV with two rows of seating. The modernized cabin offers all the latest in tech safety and driver assistance, depending on the trim level. The base Laredo comes with the essentials, while the upscale Summit and Overland trim levels offer luxuriously quilted leather upholstery, open-pore wood trim, and more high-tech digital displays. And though the Grand Cherokee is a two-row SUV, buyers looking for an additional third row can upgrade to the Grand Cherokee L.

When it comes to comfort, the 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee has what you want. The all-new Cherokee comes fitted with wide seats that provide a bit more cushion than what passengers are probably used to, but they will notice while driving around our hilly Mount Airy–maybe even take a quick trip off the beaten path to test out the springs and cushions. The same goes for the cabin itself. It’s wide, long, and full of room. You are free to stretch and lay back, enjoy the soft-touch materials throughout, and if you listen as hard as you can, you might be able to hear the engine purring from underneath the hood. It’s quiet, cool, and one of the most pleasant rides you will get in a mid-size SUV.

The 2024 Wagoneer drops the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 engine and makes standard (for all trim levels) the twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six engine–which was in previous years a no-cost option for the base model Wagoneer. Another substantial change for 2024 is that the Top-Spec Series III will now come with four-wheel drive as standard, and it will come with an air-spring suspension system.

The luxurious Wagoneer is the perfect family car, fit for long travels and for those quick trips to town. Driving the long stretch from Mount Airy to Charlotte and back for a day trip will be a little easier on the wallet with the rear-wheel-drive Wagoneer, which boasts 17 mpg city and 24 mpg highway. The all-wheel drive Wagoneer gets an estimated 16 mpg city and 23 mpg highway, so not much of a difference in fuel economy if you want to power-up to the AWD. Regardless which one you choose, it’s good to know both RWD and AWD are options for the standard-length and the extended-wheelbase L Wagoneer models. To see how similar these systems are, we tested the Grand Wagoneer L in rear-wheel-drive and measured 20 mpg!

When the Jeep Wagoneer was first manufactured it was an immediate hit, and in the many years since, it has become a celebrated collector’s item. Rebranding the Wagoneer was a gamble, but it has clearly paid off, as 2024 sales have already beat 2023’s numbers for the entire year. The Jeep brand has created its classiest vehicle to date, and America is in love with it.

Fluids and Add-Ons

Kicking back, enjoying good food, having a blast with friends and loved ones—that’s what summer tailgating is all about. When planning your spread, remember to incorporate some easy drinks and snacks that complement your main dishes.

Keep the drink options cool and refreshing. You could make a big batch of fruity sangria or a pitcher of lemonade with a twist (maybe add some mint or berries for extra flair). If you’re into carbonation, sparkling water with citrus or cucumber slices is a hit. And the classic iced tea or cold brew coffee will satisfy those who need a caffeine fix!

Finger foods are the way to go for your accompanying snacks. Grab some pre-made veggie platters with dip, or make your own with crunchy veggies (e.g., carrots, celery, bell peppers). Cheese and charcuterie boards are also a crowd-pleaser; pick a variety of cheeses, add some nuts and dried fruits, and voila! Of course, you can’t go wrong with chips and salsa, either. Try different salsa flavors like mango or pineapple for a tropical twist.

Going the Extra Mile

Distracted driving is a pressing issue affecting everyone on the road. As we traverse the picturesque highways and bustling urban arteries of the Tar Heel State, the perils of divided attention demand our attention.

While the dangers of texting or tinkering with our devices while driving are well-documented, another facet of this dilemma often flies under the radar: the potential distraction posed by modern safety features in our vehicles. Below, Mount Airy Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Fiat navigates the complexities of distracted driving in North Carolina, where even the tools meant to bolster our safety can inadvertently divert our focus from the task. Here’s a preview of the technologies we’ll discuss:

  • Voice-activated controls are intended to reduce manual distractions, but voice commands still require cognitive attention and can potentially divert focus from the road.
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) can reduce the need for constant speed adjustments but might lead drivers to rely too heavily on the system and become less attentive.
  • Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) are designed to prevent accidents caused by drifting. The problem is that these systems may encourage drivers to pay less attention to their actual lane positioning.
  • Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) is helpful for improving awareness, but relying solely on this system can cause drivers to overlook traditional shoulder checks.
  • Automatic parking assistance helps drivers park parallel or perpendicularly. Though convenient, some drivers become overly reliant on this technology and miss important details in the process.
  • Collision avoidance systems are known to mitigate accidents; that said, drivers can become complacent in their driving behavior and assume the system will always intervene.

Driver safety technologies are a marvel when used responsibly

NC in the News

Winston-Salem has recently garnered national attention for an unfortunate distinction: being labeled the most dangerous city in the United States for driving during rush hour. Not surprisingly, the designation has sparked concern among residents and officials alike, prompting a closer examination of traffic safety measures and enforcement in the area.

Data from both national and North Carolina sources has revealed another critical statistic: the period between 9 p.m. and 11:59 p.m. on Friday or Saturday nights is the most dangerous time to be on the road. There’s a genuine need for heightened awareness and proactive measures to address the specific challenges of nighttime driving, particularly during weekends.

Some transportation experts and journalists have suggested distracted driving as a leading cause of these late-night fatalities. As communities grapple with these concerning trends, concerted efforts to improve road safety and reduce traffic-related incidents are paramount.

6 Potentially Dangerous Safety Technologies

So, how can we play our part in keeping the roads safe? The key is to get in the habit of using today’s stellar driver safety technology without letting it divert our attention. Let’s take a look at the features most likely to enable distracted driving:

1. Voice-Activated Controls

Picture this: You’re cruising down the highway, wind in your hair (or blasting A/C), and you realize you forgot to change the music. With voice-activated controls, you can just say the magic words and your favorite tunes start jamming without ever taking your eyes off the road. It’s like having a personal assistant right in your car.

These nifty features aren’t just reserved for the luxury rides. Many modern vehicles are equipped with voice-activated controls for navigation, entertainment, and climate control systems. Voice commands are supposed to make life easier and safer on the road. After all, keeping your hands on the wheel and eyes on the prize is a top priority. But even if you’re not physically tapping away on buttons, using your voice demands a chunk of your attention.

You’re belting out your favorite tune and trying to tell your car to crank up the A/C — all while navigating rush hour traffic. That’s a lot going on in your noggin. And as much as we’d like to believe we’re master multitaskers, our brains can only handle so much at once. Voice commands may seem like the answer to all your road trip prayers, but they could also be pulling your focus away from the road ahead.

Fortunately, there’s a silver lining. Like any tool, it’s all about how you use voice commands. If you’re blasting music on an open highway with nothing but tumbleweeds for company, you’re probably safe to command away. But if you’re navigating a maze of city streets during rush hour, maybe hold off on switching up that playlist until you hit a red light.

2. Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) is like your car’s personal traffic butler, automatically keeping a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. However, as with all good things, there’s a catch. While ACC can take some of the load off your shoulders, some folks start relying on it too much, zoning out or getting distracted by that tempting playlist or scenic view.

Consider cruising down the highway. Everything’s smooth sailing, and suddenly, the car ahead slams on the brakes. ACC is there, doing its thing, but you’re off in la-la land—perhaps checking your phone or daydreaming about dinner. The outcome probably won’t make you friends with the driver you’re tailgating!

ACC is fantastic for taking the edge off those long drives, but it’s not an excuse to switch off your brain. Keep your eyes on the road and hands on the wheel, and save the daydreaming for when you’re safely parked.

3. Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Lane Keeping Assist (LKA)

As the name suggests, Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) represent two significant safety features. LDW serves as a preemptive alert system, signaling drivers when their vehicle begins to unintentionally veer out of its designated lane. LKA provides an active response by autonomously steering the car back into its proper lane alignment.

These systems undoubtedly offer invaluable assistance in mitigating the risk of accidents resulting from unintentional lane departures. That said, there’s a notable concern regarding their potential to foster complacency among drivers. Some people become overly reliant on LDW and LKA, which diminishes their attentiveness to maintain precise lane positioning.

Consider the scenario of a driver navigating a highway with LDW regularly emitting alerts at the slightest deviation from the lane’s center. Over time, the driver might develop a false sense of security and assume that the technology will perpetually compensate for all lapses in attention or adherence to lane discipline.

As with the other technologies on this list, LDW and LKA are not a substitute for sustained driver attentiveness and adherence to safe driving practices. We must remain mindful of our responsibility to stay vigilant and engaged when operating a vehicle to keep ourselves and those around us safe.

4. Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM)

Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) is like having an extra set of eyes on the road. It’s a nifty system that employs sensors to keep tabs on vehicles lingering in those pesky blind spots. For example, if there’s a car hiding in your blind spot, BSM springs into action and gives you a heads-up through alerts. It can save you from potential sideswipes and fender-benders.

While BSM is great for boosting awareness, don’t think of it as a magic fix. Relying solely on this tech inadvertently encourages some drivers to abandon traditional shoulder checks. A quick glance over your shoulder is still an effective strategy for blind spot detection, especially when coupled with BSM. In other words, BSM is your trusty sidekick, not the hero of the story. Cover your bases to keep that safety net intact.

5. Automatic Parking Assistance

Automatic parking assistance eliminates the hassle of parallel or perpendicular parking. Say, for instance, you’re cruising down a busy street and eyeing that perfect parking spot, but the thought of maneuvering into it makes you break out in a cold sweat. This features takes control of the steering so you can focus solely on the gas and brake pedals. It’s almost like having a parking fairy godmother guiding you into that tight spot as you sip your coffee peacefully.

Automatic parking assistance is undoubtedly convenient, but there’s a risk of becoming too reliant on it. You use it once, then twice, and suddenly you’re wondering how you ever parked without it. Relying too heavily on this technology might cause you to miss out on crucial details during the parking process. You might overlook that fire hydrant lurking just inches away or fail to notice the curb creeping up on your bumper.

Remember that this feature is meant to assist, not replace, your parking skills. Keep your eyes peeled and use a little extra caution when parking in tight spots.

6. Collision Avoidance Systems

Collision avoidance systems incorporate sensors and cameras to detect potential collisions; they may automatically apply brakes or alert drivers to take evasive action. Although effective in mitigating accidents, it’s easy to develop complacency and assume the system will always intervene.

These systems act as an additional set of eyes on the road to anticipate potential collisions. If a vehicle swerves into your lane, the collision avoidance system springs into action by applying brakes or prompting you to take control. However, some drivers fall into the trap of thinking, “The car will handle it,” neglecting their responsibility behind the wheel. While these systems serve as safety nets, remember that you’re ultimately in charge. Proactive and attentive driving remains the cornerstone of road safety.

How To Use Safety Features Properly

Driver safety technologies are a marvel when used responsibly. It’s all about harnessing their assistance while maintaining your attentiveness. Here are some key strategies:

  • Independent Driving: Regularly practice driving without relying solely on the assistance of safety technologies to hone your skills and maintain situational awareness.
  • Backup Awareness: Even with safety features like blind-spot monitoring and collision warning systems, always incorporate traditional driving practices (e.g., checking mirrors, looking over your shoulder, using turn signals).
  • Limit Dependency: Avoid becoming overly reliant on safety technologies by consciously using them as aids rather than replacements for attentive driving.
  • Hands-Free Discipline: When using hands-free technology, limit your conversations to essential information. Also, don’t engage in emotionally charged discussions or complex decision-making conversations.
  • Active Engagement: Continuously monitor the road environment even when utilizing hands-free features; that way, you’re prepared to intervene if the situation demands manual control.
  • Regular Evaluation: Periodically assess your reliance on safety technologies and hands-free features to ensure they enhance rather than detract from your ability to drive safely.

Modern safety features are designed to enhance road safety but can also pose potential dangers when used incorrectly. As we navigate distracted driving in North Carolina and beyond, it’s imperative to incorporate driver assistance tools without letting them compromise our focus. Vigilance, active engagement, and regular self-assessment are crucial to ensuring these technologies serve as aids rather than substitutes for attentive driving.
