As August winds down, schools are beginning to start back up. And, whether your child is attending virtually or in-person, this means there is going to be more traffic and bustling about. But don’t panic, prepare instead. With the right precautions in place, you and your children can travel safely as we try to navigate the months ahead.

 

Carpooling is a great way to save some money, help the environment, and socialize, but during a pandemic it is important to know the right protocol, and for everyone involved to follow it consistently.

The first step to a safe carpool is making sure everyone is aware of the situation we are in, and all are on board to work together to keep everyone safe. Begin by contacting the other passengers and drivers who will be in the carpool. There is no need to panic, but you do need to be sure everyone in the car will be wearing a mask, and there will be enough room so that each person can sit without leaning into or resting on another passenger.

It’s also a good idea to have everyone involved agree to take temperatures each day before entering the vehicle. Be sure and have plenty of hand sanitizer, and make it a rule to use it before entering and again immediately after getting out of the car.

Here are a few more tips from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention:

1. Try and keep from touching surfaces. Consciously taking into account what is most touched in your surroundings will help you cut down on using hand sanitizer as much. For those cases when you do have to touch something commonly handled, simply apply sanitizer or wash your hands as soon as possible. While carpooling, avoiding surfaces is especially difficult, so wearing gloves is a good idea.
2. Limit the number of passengers. Though it might cause multiple trips or even more cars on the road, it is important to create space even in confined spots. Consider cutting the limit to half of what it was before and require everyone in the car to wear a mask during the trip.
3. Weather permitting, keep windows open or cracked so plenty of air gets in and out. Good ventilation is key to keep from the spread of germs.
4. Clean those hands. After touching surfaces outside of your own home, be sure to use sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Or, if you would rather use soap, wash in warm water for at least 20 seconds.

 

More Safety Tips

Here are a few more tips on keeping your young ones safe as you travel:

• Make sure car seats are tightly secured and wiped down with disinfectant between each use. When clipping in a car seat it is important to make sure it is pulled tightly against the back of the seat. Sometimes you really have to wrench on the belt, but if you can wiggle the seat back and forth with minimal effort, it’s not tight enough.
• When strapping your child into a car seat, be sure the top strap is pulled up to the top of the child’s chest. You should be able to fit two fingers between the top strap and the child, so it needs to be snug but not too tight to where it’s uncomfortable.
• Keep your eyes on the road and your hands upon the wheel. No matter how badly your child is screaming for a toy he dropped on the floor of the car, do not try and reach around or turn around to grab it. If it is something your child needs at the moment, simply pull the car over and put on the hazards. It might only take a second to look back and grab that toy while driving, but it also only takes a second to completely veer into the opposite lane.

The 2020 Jeep Gladiator Altitude Edition comes in the Sport S trim, which includes dark color pops on the exterior along with dark gray accents—body-color grille, body-color fender flares, black badges—and it comes with 18-inch Granite Crystal wheels (which are wrapped with 255/70R18 Bridgestone Dueler All-Terrain tires).

A three-piece black Freedom Top hardtop comes standard with the Altitude edition, though there is the option for a dual-top package, which includes a soft-top. Exterior colors include standard black or white, Firecracker Red, Billet Silver, Granite Crystal, Sting Gray, Hydro Blue, Gator (green), and Gobi (beige).

Mostly, the interior to the Altitude is the same as the 2020 Gladiator (regular edition), but there are a few differences: black stitching around a leather-wrapped steering wheel; a Wizard Black instrument panel; and there are a few bolster accents throughout.

 

What Sets the Gladiator Altitude Apart

The Gladiator is already a head-turner, but now with the new Altitude Edition, heads are turning even more. The Altitude can do all these things and more, namely in terms of traction, water fording, maneuverability, articulation, and ground clearance.

• An Abundance of Latch Anchors. It is so annoying when attempting to install a car seat (or multiple car seats) and there are only a few places made to hold it. Most vehicles, including minivans, usually only have two or three seats equipped to hold a child’s seat. The 2020 Chrysler Pacifica has up to five seating positions for a car seat, which means you can pretty much fit your child just about anywhere you want. The second row, third row, doesn’t matter. The Pacifica is all about making things better and easier, especially for those driving with multiple passengers.
• Entertainment For Everyone. Chrysler includes its UCONNECT Theater system in the new Pacifica, and this means fun for everyone inside. There are two touchscreens fully equipped with games, apps, and a Blu-ray/DVD player. And what’s wonderful about UCONNECT is that it allows parents to control what the kids in the back are watching by including a “listen in” feature that, with a push of a button, shows on the front screen whatever is being watched or played in the back. Why doesn’t every vehicle have this?! Just another example of why the 2020 Chrysler Pacifica is the minivan to beat.
• Easy Cleaning. There is actually a vacuum cleaner built into the new Pacifica. The Honda Odyssey came out with this idea as well, but it’s placed way in the back and is difficult to access. But the Pacifica’s Stow & Vac system is placed right in the second row. This is a smart move since the second row is where most traffic comes and goes, which leaves particles behind. Once again, Chrysler makes things smarter and easier for us all.
• True Luxury Means Authentic Materials. Rather than the faux wood paneling and cheap plastic pieces found in most other minivans, the 2020 Pacifica holds to its luxury roots. Look as long as you like, you won’t find one piece of cheap material. From the thick leather seats to the soft-touch surfaces throughout, everything feels of true substance. Nonetheless, this town can make for a great weekend or day trip even for those who are not diehard fans of the show.

 

Andy Griffith Activities

For avid and casual fans alike, there’s no other place in the world to visit if you’re looking for an Andy Griffith Show experience. Perhaps the most immersive experience available is the Mayberry Squad Car Tour, which features a vintage Ford Galaxie 500 car from 1962 (just like the one Barney drove). Guests meet at Wally’s Service Station to begin the tour, and several stops are made at other iconic establishments from the show.

Among the stops is Andy Griffith’s Homeplace, which is the two-bedroom house where Griffith lived with his parents from the time he was six-years-old to the beginning of his college days. Through restorations, much of the home stays true to the styles of the 30s and 40s. Not only does it make a great spot for photo ops, but the home is even open for guests to stay (roughly $175-200 a night).

The Museum of Regional History

The Mount Airy Museum of Regional History sits on Main Street and contains four floors of exhibits, photos, and artifacts related to local history. For instance, visitors will learn about the original settlers of “The Hollows” of North Carolina, including the Saura Indians (the area’s first Native American residents) and the 18th-century immigrants who settled in the region. For fans of music, the exhibit on Old-Time music—which is unique to the region—might pique interest. And the “Hands on History” gallery can be particularly engaging for children.

 

The Earle Theater

The historic Earle Theater was built in 1938, and restorations over the years have kept the structure true to its original design. Not only is the Earle a beautiful structure, but it’s also home to a variety of fun family activities. For example, you can see family-friendly movies throughout the week, with titles rotating regularly.

Also, at the Old-Time Music Heritage Hall, which sits in the theater, visitors can enjoy exhibits and artifacts related to several old-time music icons of Surry County. Moreover, old-time and bluegrass jam sessions are commonplace at the Earle during the weekend, and visitors can even see a live taping of WPAQ’s Saturday Morning Merry-Go-Round, which is one of the nation’s longest-running radio shows.

 

The Granite Quarry

Take a step away from Downtown Mount Airy, and you can see the North Carolina Granite Corporation’s quarry—the largest of its kind in the world. It’s so large, in fact, that it can be seen from outer space. For more than 150 years, granite has been quarried in North Carolina, and it serves as the state’s official rock.

While the site cannot be toured, there is a ridge positioned high above the quarry where visitors can enjoy a magnificent view of the site for free, and it’s open to visitors every day of the week. If interested, go into the quarry’s main office for more information and ask when an excavation is taking place.

 

Siamese Twins Exhibit

After touring the world as a sideshow attraction for many years, the world’s original Siamese twins—Eng and Chung Bunker—settled in the Mount Airy area in the 1840s. It is here where they married sisters Adelaide and Sarah Yates and raised their children. Between the two couples, there were 22 children. As of now, more than 1,500 descendants come in from all across the country for huge family reunions.

Visitors to the Andy Griffith Playhouse can find an exhibit dedicated to the Bunker brothers, including photos, artifacts, and information that delve into their extraordinary lives. And you can visit their gravesite at the nearby White Plains Baptist Church.

 

Dining

When it comes to historic, old-fashioned dining options, few places can outdo Mount Airy. The Snappy Lunch restaurant, founded in 1923, was frequented by Andy Griffith when he was growing up, was a staple on the Andy Griffith Show, and is open present-day for breakfast and lunch (just be sure to show up early to avoid the line). Leon’s Burger Express is another old-fashioned breakfast/lunch diner that is steeped in history and offers great food.

The 2020 Gladiator—A Closer Look

Though the Jeep Gladiator is technically a truck, the entire front half is clearly a Jeep Wrangler, because…why not?  The Wrangler build has supported a large fan base for many years; it’s tough, unique look is a Jeep signature and the boxy features fit well with a truck bed in the back. So there you have it: a Wrangler and a truck together as one.

For the 2020 Gladiator, a black cloth top comes standard, but there is the option for a composite top and you can get it in black or the color of the rest of the body. Hard- or soft-top, once removed the Gladiator’s unique look reveals itself. You can also remove the doors and fold the windshield down—exactly the same as with the Jeep Wrangler—for an extreme open-air experience, one you will not get with any other pickup on the market.

For the truck portion of the Gladiator, the five-foot bed is made of steel and comes with a spray-in bed liner, as well as, a roll-up cover. Instead of being attached to the back hatch as is the case with the Wrangler, the spare tire rests underneath the steel bed of the Gladiator and is easily accessible.

The interior of the Jeep Gladiator is, unsurprisingly, much like that of the new Wrangler—again, if it ain’t broke…Most of the controls sit up high and there is an available 7.0-inch or 8.0-inch touchscreen to choose from.

Drivers can opt for a Gladiator Sahara or Rubicon interior version that comes with optional leather upholstery and stitched vinyl over the dashboard, which helps dress things up a bit from the standard version.

 

Prices and Packages

Jeep likes to give you options, so the Gladiator comes in various trims, all of them designed with a particular type of driver in mind.

Gladiator Sport. The more athletic trim, the Sport has an MSRP of $35,000 (at Mount Airy Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, we offer it at $37,349). The 2020 Gladiator Sport comes with optional power locks and windows, alloy wheels, an upgraded infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, compatible hardtop, and an automatic transmission. Gladiator Overland. The Overland is a bit of an upgrade from the Sport and has an MSRP of around $46,000 (we have it at $42,780). The upgrades include the following:

The Gladiator Overland is perfect for off-roading, family drives, etc. It does it all.

Gladiator Rubicon. This is the top trim level for the Gladiator and it comes with all the bells and whistles. With an MSRP of $55,000 (we, of course, have it at $49, 986), the Rubicon version of the Gladiator is for the serious off-roaders. This model comes with a higher suspension and wider axles and 33-inch tires, plus sway bars that easily disconnect with the touch of a button. There are also differential locks, an optional trailer package that adds a receiver hitch rated to tow up to 7,000 pounds.
